Last updated: May 17, 2026 ## Behavior over opinion Most founders think they're validating ideas. In reality, they're validating interest — not demand. "Would you use this?" is the wrong question. Demand Discovery replaces it with: who is acting like they want this right now ? We measure clicks, replies, objections, search behavior, and expressions of urgency. These are demand signals — the only reliable indicator that a market exists. ## Step 1 — Market research (foundation) Before we test, we map the landscape: who's competing, how they're positioned, and where the gaps look real. This is your free Market Research report. It builds confidence, but it isn't validation — a market can be large, competitive, and still lack urgency. See our market research tools for the foundation work. ## Step 2 — Demand Discovery (proof) The core of startup idea validation . We move from analysis to experimentation — not by building product, but by testing behavior: targeted hypothesis testing, real-world outreach, signal interpretation, and decision-making. No single signal is definitive on its own. Our validation framework triangulates search intent, outreach responses, landing-page engagement, and buying signals into one evidence-based score and a clear recommendation: Build, Pivot, or Kill. Still wondering is my idea good ? You can test product demand before writing a single line of code. ## Step 3 — Agentic Launch (continuous) Once demand is validated, the question changes from "should I build this?" to "how do I keep learning from the market?" Agentic Launch turns Demand Discovery into a continuous system: ongoing outreach, real-time signal tracking, and continuous refinement. Over time, you build a living dataset of market behavior. It's calculated using seven distinct market signals and produces a clear Build, Pivot, or Kill recommendation. ## What the Startup Demand Score Measures Think of it as a credit score for your startup idea, but instead of measuring financial reliability, it measures market demand. The higher the score, the more evidence exists that people actually want what you're planning to build. The Demand Score is generated by the Demand Discovery Framework , which analyzes search demand, founder discussions, startup activity, hiring signals, developer ecosystem data, buyer outreach responses, and landing page conversion signals. ## How the Score Is Calculated Each of the seven demand signals is scored individually based on the strength and quality of the data found. These individual scores are then weighted and combined into the final Demand Score. Signals with direct buyer evidence (outreach responses, landing page conversions) are weighted more heavily than passive signals (search demand, hiring trends). This ensures the score reflects actual purchase intent, not just curiosity. The scoring methodology is inspired by how venture capital firms evaluate deal flow — using multiple independent data sources to triangulate market opportunity. ## Signals Behind a Strong Demand Score 70–100: BUILD Strong demand signals across multiple categories. The market is actively looking for this solution. Proceed with building your MVP and acquiring early customers. 40–69: TEST Mixed signals. Some demand indicators are positive but others need validation. Run additional experiments — buyer outreach, landing page tests, or deeper competitive analysis — before committing resources. 0–39: KILL Weak demand across most signals. The market isn't actively searching for this solution and buyers aren't responding. Consider pivoting to a different problem or market. ## How Founders Should Use the Score A recent analysis of "AI Browser Agent for Back-Office Workflows" scored 86/100 with a BUILD recommendation. Strong search demand, high founder discussion activity, active startup launches in the space, and promising buyer interest all contributed to the high score. Want to see how your idea scores? Inspired by venture capital due diligence, it replaces gut instinct with evidence. ## What a Good Validation Framework Includes A strong validation framework doesn't rely on a single data point. It combines multiple independent signals — search behavior, community sentiment, competitive activity, and buyer intent — to build a complete picture of market demand. The best frameworks produce a clear, actionable recommendation. ## The Demand Discovery Validation Framework The framework evaluates seven distinct demand signals. Each signal provides a different lens into whether your idea has real market pull. ## 1. Search Demand How many people are actively searching for solutions to the problem you want to solve? We analyze Google Trends data, keyword search volume, and search intent to quantify demand. ## 2. Founder Discussions What are founders and builders saying about this problem space? We analyze Reddit threads, Hacker News discussions, and Indie Hackers conversations for sentiment and frequency. ## 3. Startup Launches Are other startups entering this space? We track Product Hunt launches, Y Combinator batches, and competitor activity to gauge market timing. ## 4. Hiring Signals Are companies hiring for roles related to your problem space? Job postings indicate real budget allocation and organizational commitment. ## 5. Developer Ecosystem Activity Is there developer momentum? We look at GitHub repositories, npm package downloads, and API adoption rates as leading indicators. ## 6. Buyer Outreach Responses When you reach out to potential customers, do they respond? Reply rates, meeting conversions, and expressed interest levels are direct demand indicators. ## 7. Landing Page Conversion Signals When potential customers see your value proposition, do they sign up? Conversion rates from AI-generated landing page tests provide concrete demand evidence. ## From Idea to Demand Evidence Each demand signal is scored individually, then combined into a single Startup Idea Demand Score from 0 to 100. The score determines the final recommendation. 70–100: Build — Strong demand signals across multiple categories. Proceed with confidence. 40–69: Test — Mixed signals. Run additional experiments before committing. 0–39: Kill — Weak demand. Pivot to a different idea or market. ## How to Use the Framework Before Building Most founders validate with opinion-based feedback — asking friends, posting on Twitter, or reading industry reports. These are lagging indicators at best. The Demand Discovery Framework uses leading indicators: real search behavior, real buyer responses, and real market activity. This is how venture capitalists evaluate opportunities. Now founders can use the same approach before writing a single line of code. They fail because nobody wanted what they built. According to CB Insights, 35% of startup failures trace back to a single cause: no market need. Startup idea validation is the process of proving real demand exists before you invest months of time and money into building. This guide covers the complete methodology: what validation actually is, the six methods that work, the false positives that fool most founders, how to read the evidence you collect, and how to decide what to do next. You can run everything here manually. At the end, we explain how Demand Discovery automates the evidence-gathering steps, but the methodology stands on its own. ## What validation is, and what it is not Startup idea validation is the systematic process of testing whether real people have a genuine problem, are actively looking for a solution, and will take action when offered one. The key word is action. Validation is not asking people whether they like your idea. It is finding evidence that they have already acted on the problem: complained about it publicly, searched for solutions, paid for inadequate alternatives, or built workarounds themselves. That distinction matters because people are polite. Ask a friend "would you use this?" and they will say yes. Ask a stranger in a survey and a surprising number will also say yes. Neither answer costs them anything, so neither answer means anything. Behavior is expensive. Opinions are free. Validation measures the expensive thing. ## The three questions validation must answer Every validation effort, whatever methods you use, should produce evidence against three questions: Does the problem exist at scale? Are enough people experiencing this problem, right now, to sustain a business? Are they actively seeking a solution? A problem people tolerate is not a market. A problem people are trying to escape is. Will they act when offered your solution? Signups, replies, preorders, meetings taken. Anything that costs the prospect something. If you can answer all three with evidence rather than opinion, you have validated the idea. If you can only answer them with enthusiasm, you have not. ## The six validation methods that work ## 1. Search demand analysis People type their problems into search engines. Search volume is one of the most honest demand signals available because nobody searches to be polite. How to do it: list the phrases someone with your target problem would search. Not your product name, the problem language. A meal-planning app's phrases are "what to make for dinner tonight" and "weekly meal plan for family of four." Check volume and trend with a keyword tool. Look for problem phrases with meaningful, stable, or growing volume, and check what currently ranks. Thin results for a high-volume problem phrase is a strong opportunity signal. What it proves: the problem exists and people actively want it solved. What it cannot prove: that they will pay, or that they will choose you. ## 2. Community complaint mining Before people search for solutions, they complain. Reddit threads, Hacker News comments, niche forums, community Slacks and Discords. Complaints are high-grade validation evidence because they are unprompted: nobody asked these people about the problem, they raised it on their own. How to do it: find where your target customers already gather. Search those spaces for problem language: "is there a tool that," "how do you deal with," "am I the only one who." Save the exact quotes with links. Note recency, repetition across different people, and whether anyone describes a workaround they built or paid for. A workaround is a person who wanted a solution badly enough to make one. What it proves: the problem is real, current, and painful enough to talk about. What it cannot prove: market size on its own. Pair it with search data. ## 3. Competitive landscape analysis Competition is evidence of demand. A crowded space means people pay to solve this problem. An empty space means either a genuine gap or no market, and you need to figure out which. How to do it: find every existing solution, including indirect ones like spreadsheets, agencies, and manual processes. For each, look for traction signals: review counts and dates, hiring, pricing changes, community complaints about them. Complaints about incumbents are double-value evidence: they confirm people pay for this, and they hand you the gap to build into. What it proves: money already flows toward this problem, and where the underserved edges are. What it cannot prove: that there is room for you. That comes from the gaps, not the crowd. ## 4. Landing page demand tests A landing page test puts a specific promise in front of real people and measures whether they act. It is the classic validation experiment because it forces the prospect to do something small but real: hand over an email address. How to do it: write one page with a clear headline stating the outcome, a short explanation, and one call to action. Drive a modest amount of traffic from the communities and channels where your search and complaint research says your buyers live. Measure conversion to signup. Benchmarks vary by market, but a cold-traffic signup rate above roughly 10% is encouraging and below 2% is a warning, provided the traffic was genuinely your target buyer. What it proves: your specific framing of the solution makes real people act. What it cannot prove: willingness to pay, unless you test price on the page. ## 5. Buyer outreach experiments Outreach puts your value proposition in front of named prospects and measures replies. It is the most direct validation method because it also builds your first pipeline: the people who reply are your beta users and first customers. How to do it: build a list of people who match your ideal customer profile, ideally people you found complaining about the problem. Send a short, honest message: you are building X because of problem Y, and you would value their take. Measure reply rate, and read the replies. Objections are not failures; they are the highest-resolution validation data you will collect. "Too expensive" validates the problem and prices the solution. "We handle this with a spreadsheet" tells you the incumbent to displace. What it proves: real, named people in your market engage when offered your solution. What it cannot prove: scale. Outreach samples are small. Pair with search volume. ## 6. Willingness-to-pay tests The strongest signal in validation is a payment or a credible commitment to pay. Preorders, paid pilots, deposits, or a pricing page with a working checkout ahead of the product. How to do it: attach a price to your landing page or your outreach conversations and ask for the smallest real commitment your stage allows. Even "would you sign a letter of intent" separates polite interest from real intent, because it costs the prospect something. What it proves: the answer to the only question that ultimately matters. ## The evidence hierarchy Not all signals are equal. When you weigh what you have collected, rank it: Payments and preorders Commitments that cost something: pilots, letters of intent, meetings taken Actions: signups, replies, waitlist joins Unprompted public behavior: complaints, searches, workarounds people built Prompted opinions: interviews and surveys Encouragement from people who know you Most founders validate at levels 5 and 6 and believe they are done. Real validation lives at levels 1 through 4. Notice that levels 1 through 4 are all behavior, and levels 5 and 6 are all talk. ## The false positives that kill startups The polite yes. Interviews where everyone loves the idea. People answer the question "are you a good person" instead of "would you pay for this." Fix: never ask hypotheticals. Ask what they currently do about the problem, and what it costs them. The vocal minority. Five enthusiastic people in a community of fifty thousand feels like demand. Check what fraction of the community engages with the problem, not just whether anyone does. The wrong-traffic landing page. A 20% signup rate from traffic that is not your buyer proves nothing. Validation traffic must come from where your evidence says buyers live. The compliment-driven pivot. Founders often drift toward whatever got praised in interviews rather than what the behavioral evidence supports. Praise is level 6 evidence. Do not steer by it. Solo-signal confidence. Any single method can mislead. Search volume without complaints may be a solved problem. Complaints without search volume may be a niche too small. Validation is triangulation: you want independent signals agreeing. ## How long this takes, and when to stop Done manually, a serious validation pass takes two to four weeks: a few days each for search analysis, complaint mining, and competitive research, then one to two weeks running a landing page and outreach in parallel. Stop when the three questions have evidence-backed answers, in either direction. A clear no is a successful validation. It just saved you six months. Decide in advance what evidence would change your mind. Founders who define kill criteria before collecting evidence actually honor them. Founders who decide afterward rationalize. ## Reading the result Strong demand evidence across independent signals: build, and keep the evidence, because the quotes and prospect lists you collected become your launch plan, your copy, and your first pipeline. Mixed evidence: usually the problem is real but your framing or audience is off. The objections and complaints you collected tell you where to aim the next iteration. Re-test the new framing before building. Weak evidence across the board: let the idea go. This is the outcome validation exists to produce cheaply. ## Automating the evidence gathering Everything above can be done by hand, and we recommend every founder do it by hand at least once. The manual version takes weeks because the evidence is scattered across search data, communities, review sites, and competitor footprints. Demand Discovery automates the collection. It is startup idea validation powered by real market signals: every report shows you the evidence behind your idea. Real people, quoted in their own words, asking for what you want to build, each quote tied to the source it came from, compiled in minutes instead of weeks. The scoring sits on top of that evidence and has to earn it. Start with a free Market Research report to see the approach on your own idea. Then $49, one time, no subscription, lets you vet two ideas: two Demand Discovery evidence reports, two landing pages, and one Agentic Launch to generate prospects for the winner. A score forces honesty: it makes you weigh the same evidence the same way for every idea, so a charming idea with no demand cannot beat a boring idea people are begging for. Here is a scoring system you can run yourself in a spreadsheet, built on the same principle we use at Demand Discovery : behavior counts, opinions do not. ## The rule that makes scoring work Score only what people do, never what they say. A survey "yes" is worth nothing. A public complaint is worth something. A payment to a bad workaround is worth a lot. If you let prompted opinions into the score, every idea scores well and the exercise is pointless. ## The five components (100 points total) ## 1. Problem evidence (0 to 30) Are people already talking about this problem, unprompted, in public? 0 to 10: you can find almost nothing. Nobody searches for it, nobody complains about it. 11 to 20: scattered mentions. The problem exists but people live with it quietly. 21 to 30: recurring, recent, emotional complaints in multiple places, plus steady or growing search volume for the problem language. Collect real quotes with links. If you cannot paste five quotes from five different people, cap this component at 15. ## 2. Willingness to pay (0 to 25) Is anyone already spending money or serious time on this problem? 0 to 8: no paid alternatives exist and nobody has built a workaround. 9 to 17: people use free tools or duct-tape workarounds and grumble about them. 18 to 25: people pay for imperfect alternatives today and complain about what they pay for. Complaints about a paid product are the strongest single signal in this entire system: they prove the money exists and show you the gap. ## 3. Market pull (0 to 20) Is the problem growing, flat, or fading? 0 to 6: search interest declining, communities going quiet. 7 to 13: stable. The problem is durable but nothing is pushing new people into it. 14 to 20: a visible force is creating new sufferers: regulation, a platform change, a technology shift, a cost spike. Score the trend of the problem, not the trend of your solution category. ## 4. Reachability (0 to 15) Can you find and reach the people who have this problem, affordably? 0 to 5: buyers are scattered and unidentifiable, or locked behind gatekeepers. 6 to 10: they gather somewhere (communities, events, directories) but engagement is slow. 11 to 15: they self-identify publicly by complaining or asking for tools, so you can contact them directly today. Test it: send ten messages to real people you found. Replies score points; silence does not. ## 5. Founder advantage (0 to 10) Why you? Lived experience with the problem, distribution you already own, or skills that shortcut the build. 0 to 3: none. You found the idea, the idea did not find you. 4 to 7: relevant background or a warm network. 8 to 10: you have the problem yourself, or you already reach the buyers. This is the smallest component on purpose. Founder fit tilts close calls; it never rescues an idea with no demand. ## Reading the total Below 40: kill or reframe. The demand evidence is not there. Killing an idea at this stage costs you a spreadsheet. Killing it after launch costs you a year. 40 to 65: not yet. Something real exists but a component is failing. Fix the weakest component with a targeted test (a landing page for willingness to pay, ten outreach messages for reachability), then rescore. 66 to 85: proceed. Move to product discovery: interviews, prototypes, an early sale, recruited from the people your evidence surfaced. 86 to 100: rare. Scores here usually mean strong incumbents saw it too. Ask why the gap is still open before celebrating. Two rules keep the score honest. Set your kill threshold before you start scoring, not after you fall in love with the number. And score two ideas, not one: a score only means something in comparison, and your second-favorite idea will surprise you more often than you expect. ## The fast way Everything above is collectible by hand in one to two weeks per idea. Demand Discovery compiles it in minutes: every report shows the evidence behind your idea. Real people, quoted in their own words, asking for what you want to build, each quote tied to the source it came from, with a 0 to 100 score built on that evidence. No API key, no signup, no code. Once connected, you can say "I have an idea I would like to run through Demand Discovery" and Claude runs your idea through real market evidence: real people, quoted in their own words, asking for what you want to build. The connector URL is always: https://mcp.demanddiscovery.ai/api/mcp That is the only URL you need on any platform. If an AI assistant gives you different install steps or a different URL, use this page instead. ## Claude on the web (easiest, nothing to install) Go to claude.ai and sign in. A free account works. Click your initials (bottom left), then Settings, then Connectors. Click "Add" (upper right), then "Add custom connector". Name it Demand Discovery and paste the URL above. Save. Start a new chat, click the plus sign (+), choose Connectors, and toggle Demand Discovery on. Say: "I have an idea I would like to run through Demand Discovery." ## Claude Desktop Open Claude Desktop and sign in. No terminal needed. In the chat window, click the plus sign (+), then Connectors, then "Manage connectors". (Or: your initials, bottom left, then Settings, then Connectors.) Add a custom connector with the URL above. Back in the chat, click +, then Connectors, and toggle Demand Discovery on. Prefer the command line? Run npx demand-discovery-install in Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac/Linux), in your computer's terminal, not in Claude's chat. Then fully quit and reopen Claude Desktop. Requires Node.js. ## Claude Code Run this in your computer's terminal, the same window where you launch Claude Code, not inside a Claude chat: claude mcp add --transport http demand-discovery https://mcp.demanddiscovery.ai/api/mcp Then restart Claude Code and type /mcp to confirm demand-discovery shows as connected. ## Optional: the Demand Discovery Skill On paid Claude plans you can also upload the free Demand Discovery Skill (a .zip from mcp.demanddiscovery.ai). Skills apply to your whole account, so it works on web and Desktop, and Claude will follow the full validation flow and show every report exactly as generated. ## Other platforms Demand Discovery also connects to ChatGPT, Cursor, Replit, Lovable, Bolt, v0 by Vercel, and Base44. Step-by-step guides with screenshots for every platform live at mcp.demanddiscovery.ai . ## Troubleshooting Claude says it can't find the tool. Remove and re-add the connector, then start a new chat. On claude.ai web, custom connectors require a plan that supports them; Claude Desktop works regardless. The connector was blocked mid-conversation. That is Claude's own safety check on newer connectors, not an error on our side. Try again in a new chat. You got a different URL from an AI assistant. Only https://mcp.demanddiscovery.ai/api/mcp is real. ## What you get Start with a free Market Research report. It feels exciting. But before you spend months building, you need to answer one question: does anyone actually want this? This guide walks you through how to validate your startup idea with real evidence. ## Why Validation Comes Before Building Before validating demand, make sure you can articulate the problem in one sentence. Who has this problem? How painful is it? What do they currently do to solve it? If you can't clearly describe the problem your startup solves, validation will be meaningless. Start here. ## Signs a Startup Idea Has Real Demand Open Google Trends and type in keywords related to your problem. Are people searching for this? Is demand growing, flat, or declining? High search volume for problem-related queries is one of the strongest demand signals. Search Reddit, Hacker News, and Indie Hackers for discussions about your problem space. Are founders talking about this pain point? Are they building solutions? Are people asking for recommendations? Competition is not a bad sign — it's validation that demand exists. Study what competitors are doing, where they're falling short, and what customers are complaining about. The best opportunities are in markets with existing demand but imperfect solutions. ## Validation Steps Founders Can Take ## Research Search Demand Use keyword research tools to estimate monthly search volume. If thousands of people are searching for solutions every month, there's likely real demand. ## Listen to Founder Communities Community discussions reveal unfiltered market sentiment. Pay attention to recurring complaints and feature requests. ## Test with a Landing Page Create a simple landing page that describes your solution and includes a sign-up form. Drive traffic to it through targeted ads or community posts. If people sign up, you have demand. If they don't, you have data. ## Reach Out to Potential Buyers Find 20-50 potential customers and send them a personalized message about the problem you're solving. Track reply rates and gauge interest. If buyers respond enthusiastically, you're onto something. ## Score Your Idea Combine all your findings into a decision. The Demand Discovery Framework automates this entire process and generates a Demand Score from 0 to 100 with a Build, Pivot, or Kill recommendation. ## Common Mistakes to Avoid Don't rely solely on friends and family for feedback — they'll tell you what you want to hear. Don't confuse your own excitement for market demand. And don't skip validation because you're afraid of what you might find. Don't build on hope. Validate with evidence. Demand Discovery helps founders validate demand before writing a single line of code. Instead of guessing, we analyze real signals from search behavior, communities, competitors, and early buyer interest — then deliver a clear recommendation on whether to build, pivot, or kill the idea. Testing product demand is one of the most important steps before building. But most approaches — landing pages, surveys, and waitlists — only capture surface-level interest. Demand Discovery goes deeper by measuring real demand signals through direct interaction with your market. Instead of guessing, you observe behavior. Learn how Demand Discovery works → Test My Startup Idea ## Example Demand Discovery Report Startup Idea AI tool that summarizes Zoom meetings for founders Demand Score 82 / 100 — Strong Early Demand Market Signals Search Demand — High: strong search interest for AI meeting summaries Community Problem Signals — Frequent discussions in founder communities Competitor Landscape — Moderate competition with space for differentiation Early Buyer Interest — Positive responses from early outreach Recommendation BUILD — Demand signals suggest strong early market interest. ## How Demand Discovery Works 1 ## Describe Your Startup Idea Tell us what you're thinking of building. Examples: AI travel planner · Creator sponsorship marketplace · Startup analytics dashboard 2 ## AI Analyzes Market Signals Demand Discovery scans: search demand community problem discussions competitor traction early buyer signals 3 ## Receive Your Demand Report You receive: Demand Score (0–100) demand evidence analysis buyer validation signals Build / Pivot / Kill recommendation ## How Product Demand Testing Works Before launching a product, smart founders run lightweight validation experiments to measure real interest. A common approach is a landing page "smoke test" — presenting the product concept and measuring how many people sign up, click, or request access. Strong early demand signals often include: Visitors joining a waitlist or requesting early access Conversion rates around 5% or higher from cold traffic Active discussions of the problem in founder communities Demand Discovery uses AI to analyze these validation signals and translate them into a clear demand signal. When you test product demand, the strongest signals are not signups — they are responses, objections, and buying intent. These are the signals Demand Discovery is designed to capture and analyze. See the full framework → ## Why this beats the alternatives Most founders rely on one of three approaches to test product demand. Here's how each one stacks up. Going with your gut "It feels like a great idea." No way to know if buyers exist 6–12 months to learn the truth Costs your savings + your nights Surveys & "would you use this?" "I asked 50 people." People say yes to be polite Stated interest ≠ buying intent No price signal, no urgency signal Demand Discovery "Real buyers, real replies." Behavior, not opinions Days, not months $49, not your savings ## What Demand Discovery Analyzes ## Problem Confirmation Analysis AI scans founder communities, social discussions, and industry conversations to determine whether the problem appears frequently and urgently. ## Startup Idea Demand Score (0–100) Signals combined into a single demand score including: • search demand • competitor traction • community problem frequency • buyer intent indicators ## AI-Generated Landing Page Demand Test Demand Discovery generates validation experiments founders can use to test real demand before building a product. One common experiment is a simple landing page that presents the product idea and measures early interest through signals such as: • waitlist signups • demo requests • early adopter interest These early signals help estimate whether real demand exists before investing time and resources into building the product. ## Buyer Outreach Validation Experiments Demand Discovery generates targeted outreach experiments founders can use to validate buyer interest. • early adopter outreach • beta tester recruitment • founder feedback requests ## Demand Evidence Report All signals are compiled into a structured report summarizing: • market demand signals • conversion potential • competitor landscape • buyer interest signals ## Build / Pivot / Kill Recommendation Demand Discovery produces a clear recommendation: BUILD — strong demand signals PIVOT — mixed signals KILL — weak demand or saturated market ## What You Receive ## Demand Discovery Report Includes: Problem Confirmation Analysis Startup Idea Demand Score (0–100) AI-Generated Landing Page Demand Test Buyer Outreach Validation Experiments Demand Evidence Report Build / Pivot / Kill Recommendation Plus: 1 month of AgenticLaunch to begin building if demand is confirmed. ## Ideas Founders Are Testing Right Now Examples of ideas founders test with Demand Discovery: AI personal CFO Creator sponsorship marketplace AI sales assistant for startups Automated investor update generator Demand Discovery helps founders determine whether ideas like these have real demand before building. How to Know in 2026 Every founder asks this question. The problem is that most founders answer it with opinions — their own, their friends', their family's. But opinions aren't evidence. Here's how to evaluate your startup idea objectively. ## What Makes a Startup Idea Good A good startup idea is one where real demand exists, you can reach the buyers, and you can build a solution that's meaningfully better than alternatives. Innovation alone doesn't make an idea good. Market pull does. + People are actively searching for solutions to the problem you're solving. + Other startups are raising money or launching products in the same space. + When you describe the problem, potential customers say "I have that exact problem." + People are currently spending money on imperfect alternatives. + Founders on Reddit and Hacker News are discussing this pain point. ## How to Evaluate Market Demand Stop asking "is my idea good?" and start asking "is there demand for this?" Good ideas with no demand fail. Average ideas with strong demand succeed. Demand is what matters. The Demand Discovery Framework evaluates seven demand signals and produces a Demand Score from 0 to 100. It tells you whether to Build, Pivot, or Kill your idea based on real market evidence. ## How to Spot Weak or Risky Ideas - You can't find anyone searching for solutions to this problem online. - No one is currently paying for alternatives — even bad ones. - When you describe your idea, people say "cool" but don't ask when they can use it. - You're building what you want, not what the market needs. - The only validation you have is friends and family saying they'd use it. ## How Demand Discovery Helps Founders Decide This isn't startup advice. It's demand data. Demand Discovery analyzes real market signals and delivers a scored recommendation so you can make confident decisions about your idea. Here's a comparison of the best validation tools available, ranked by how effectively they help you prove real demand. ## What Startup Validation Tools Should Measure The best validation tools go beyond surveys and opinions. They should measure real demand signals: search volume, community discussions, competitor traction, and buyer intent. Tools that only capture qualitative feedback leave founders guessing. ## Best Tools for Startup Idea Validation ## Demand Discovery Best for: Comprehensive demand validation with a scored recommendation. Demand Discovery analyzes seven demand signals — search demand, founder discussions, startup launches, hiring signals, developer ecosystem, buyer outreach, and landing page conversions — to produce a Demand Score from 0-100. Unique features include AI-generated landing page tests, automated buyer outreach experiments, and a clear Build/Pivot/Kill recommendation. Pricing starts at $0 for market research and $299 for full demand validation. ## Google Trends + Keyword Research Best for: Quick, free check on search demand trends. Google Trends is the fastest way to see if interest in your problem is growing or declining. Pair it with a keyword research tool like Ahrefs or Ubersuggest to quantify monthly search volume. Limitation: search data alone doesn't validate willingness to pay. ## Lean Canvas / Business Model Canvas Best for: Structuring your thinking about the business model. Great for organizing assumptions, but doesn't test them. Think of it as a planning tool, not a validation tool. You still need external evidence that demand exists. ## Landing Page Builders (Carrd, Webflow, Unbounce) Best for: Running your own landing page demand tests. Build a page, drive traffic, and measure sign-up rates. Effective but requires manual setup, copywriting, and ad spend. Demand Discovery automates this entire process with AI-generated landing pages. ## Customer Interview Platforms (Calendly + Typeform) Best for: Qualitative validation through direct conversations. Interviews provide depth but are slow, biased toward politeness, and hard to scale. Use them as a supplement to quantitative demand signals, not as your primary validation method. ## Community Research (Reddit, HN, Indie Hackers) Best for: Understanding founder sentiment and problem frequency. Free and insightful, but requires manual research and doesn't quantify demand. The Demand Discovery Framework automates community signal analysis. ## How Demand Discovery Compares Most tools on this list address one part of validation. Demand Discovery combines all seven demand signals into a single scored report with a clear recommendation. It's the only tool that runs buyer outreach experiments and AI-generated landing page tests as part of the validation process. ## How to Choose the Right Validation Tool If you want a quick, free signal check, start with Google Trends and community research. If you want comprehensive, data-backed validation with a scored recommendation, use Demand Discovery. If you're already building and want qualitative feedback, add customer interviews. The best approach combines quantitative demand signals with qualitative understanding. The right tools help you understand your market, analyze competitors, and measure demand — all before investing in development. ## What Startup Market Research Tools Should Do The best market research tools measure real signals: search volume trends, competitive activity, community discussions, and buyer intent. Tools that only produce reports without actionable insights leave founders guessing about real demand. ## Best Tools for Founder Research ## Search Demand Tools Google Trends Free tool for tracking search interest over time. Great for spotting growing or declining trends in your problem space. Ahrefs / SEMrush Paid keyword research tools that provide monthly search volume, keyword difficulty, and competitive analysis. Essential for understanding how many people are searching for solutions. ## Community Research Tools Reddit Search Search specific subreddits for discussions about your problem. Filter by relevance and recency to understand current pain points. Hacker News Algolia Search Search the full Hacker News archive to find technical discussions, product launches, and founder perspectives in your space. ## Competitive Analysis Tools Crunchbase Track startup funding, investor activity, and company growth in your category. Funded competitors validate that investors see market opportunity. Product Hunt Monitor launches in your category. Popular launches indicate market interest and reveal feature gaps in existing solutions. ## How Demand Discovery Fits Into the Stack Demand Discovery Combines all market research signals into a single Demand Score . Analyzes search demand, founder discussions, startup launches, hiring signals, developer ecosystem activity, buyer outreach responses, and landing page conversion data. Produces a Build, Pivot, or Kill recommendation. ## Choosing the Right Research Approach If you're validating a startup idea, you don't need every tool on this list. Start with Google Trends and community research to get a quick read on demand. Then use competitive analysis to understand the landscape. Agentic Launch runs three 30-day validation cycles on your idea. We don't just answer if demand exists — we map where it lives and surface who it lives in. You read three summary emails. We do the work. Behavior over opinion.™ Most validation tools ask people what they think. Agentic Launch watches what they do — which communities the conversation lives in, who replies, who asks for the price, who books a call, who says they'll pay. Opinions are cheap. Behavior is the signal that matters. 3 30-day cycles, one validation window 6 Prospect-generation triggers across 90 days — 5 fire automatically 3 Summary emails you read — at day 30, 60, and 90 One click on Day 1. Five auto-sweeps after that. Three professional cycle reports. The only thing you do is decide what to do with what we found. ## The 90-day spine Each cycle is 30 days. Each closes with a summary email. The structure is the same every time — what changes is what we learn. ## Cycle 1 — Days 1–30 Cycle 1 of 3 Find the conversation. Day 1 You click Generate Prospects. We pull behavioral signals across all five categories, map the communities where demand for your idea actually lives, surface specific named people who match the ICP, and send the first batch of personalized outreach. You Day 10 Signal sweep — we pull fresh signals, identify new prospects, and send the next outreach wave. Day 20 Signal sweep — second pass. More signal, more prospects, more outreach. Day 30 Cycle closes. Cycle 1 summary email lands in your inbox. Cycle 2 auto-starts. Email ## Cycle 2 — Days 31–60 Cycle 2 of 3 Tighten the Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), sharpen the angle. Day 31 Day-1 batch fires automatically using the refined ICP — and the communities where cycle 1 actually got traction. Day 40 Signal sweep — refining what worked in cycle 1. Day 50 Signal sweep — final outreach wave before cycle 2 closes. Day 60 Cycle closes. Cycle 2 summary email. Cycle 3 auto-starts. Email ## Cycle 3 — Days 61–90 Cycle 3 of 3 Monitoring only. Give late repliers time to land. Day 61 No new outreach. Gmail watcher classifies inbound replies on existing threads. Days 61–90 Late-cycle reply window. Conversations that started in cycle 2 finish out. Day 90 Final summary email. Subscription archives. Slot frees for your next idea. Email Cycle 3 is monitoring-only by design — we stop outreach so late repliers from cycle 2 have time to land before the final verdict. We'd rather report a complete picture than a noisy one. ## The three emails you'll read Live previews from a real cycle — a sample idea iterating from insufficient signal in cycle 1, to moderate signal in cycle 2, to a BUILD verdict in cycle 3. These are the actual emails our production system sends. ## Cycle 1 — Insufficient signal Live email render Audience exists, the opener didn't land. Recommendation: gather more data. Cycle 2 will tighten the Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and switch to a sharper hook. ## Cycle 2 — Moderate signal Live email render Reply rate nearly doubled. The "summarize, don't write" angle landed. Cycle 3 will pivot from messaging tests to willingness-to-pay tests. ## Cycle 3 — Strong signal · BUILD Live email render 35% reply rate, willingness-to-pay confirmed at $19/mo, two buyers already asking. The signal is unambiguous. Verdict: BUILD. ## The five behavioral signal categories Every cycle pulls signal across five distinct behavioral categories. Together, they answer the three questions that actually matter: does real demand exist, where does it live, and who will pay for it. Discussion Public threads where your audience already talks about the pain — forums, comment chains, technical discussions. Intent Searches, prelaunch follows, watchlists, and waitlist signals that surface buying intent before purchase. Adoption Install counts, downloads, and usage curves on registries where the numbers are hard to fake. Behavior beats opinion. Spend Money already moving in adjacent categories. People paying for partial solutions are the highest-signal prospects. Funding Capital flowing into the space — venture investment, grant money, accelerator interest — signals validated market gravity. ## You stay in control After cycle 1 closes, you can pause or archive any idea from your dashboard. Both free the slot. Pause Frees the slot but keeps the idea live and the data preserved. You can resume on it later if a slot opens up. Best when you want to think before continuing. Back comes 400 words of clean prose. Market size in the low billions. Three competitor weaknesses, named. A "growing trend" of backend teams adopting contract-first development. A suggested $79/seat price point. The founder reads it twice, screenshots the best paragraph, and starts wireframing. Six months later: no users. No replies. No traction. They go back and try to source the statistics. They can't. Two of the "three competitors" are real companies that don't actually sell into that category. The "growing trend" was an extrapolation from a single unrelated DevOps blog post in the model's training data. The $79 price point was a confident guess. The chatbot didn't lie. It hallucinated — generated content that sounded true, was internally consistent, and was in fact made up. The clinical term is confabulation , fabricated reasoning the speaker believes is true. The AI world has settled on hallucination , and that's the word we'll use throughout this piece. The cost of acting on a hallucinated validation isn't time. It's runway, opportunity cost, and the years of your life you spend building the wrong thing. If your validation tool can't show you the underlying signal that produced its verdict, it hallucinated the verdict. ## "Reasoning about a market" vs "measuring a market" There are two completely different things happening behind the chat box, and they look identical when the answer arrives. Reasoning about a market. A language model is asked a question. It produces a plausible-sounding answer from its training data and its pattern-matching abilities. The output looks like analysis. It is not. The model has not observed the market. It has observed text about markets , written by humans, frozen at a training cutoff date. When you ask it about an idea that didn't exist in its training data, it pattern-matches from adjacent ideas and produces a confident extrapolation. That extrapolation has no grounding in what is happening in the real world right now. It cannot, because the model has never been there. Measuring a market. A tool reaches out to real-time data sources where people are actually doing things — searching, complaining, paying, hiring, posting, abandoning carts, signing up for waitlists, downloading, reviewing — and reports back what is happening, with citations to the underlying source. The tool may then summarize the findings. The findings themselves are real, dated, and verifiable. Most "AI validation" products on the market today are doing the first. They wrap a language model in a chat interface, prompt-engineer it to sound like a market analyst, and ship. The user gets a confident answer. The user has no way to verify it. There is a real category of validation tools that measure. There is also a much larger category that reasons. The two look identical in the chat interface. They are not identical when you act on them. ## Four ways to spot hallucination in an AI validation answer You can apply this checklist to any tool you're using right now. Open the tool in another tab and run the test. 1. There are no citations to the underlying signal. If the tool says "there is strong demand for X" but cannot point you to specific search queries, specific public threads, specific job postings, specific funding announcements, specific waitlist signups — it is making the claim up. Real demand leaves traces. A tool that has measured those traces will show them to you, by URL, by date, by source name. A tool that handwaves about "strong consumer interest" without naming a single observable is a chat interface dressed up as a research product. 2. The verdict is the same regardless of when you ask. Real markets shift week to week. Search volume drops. New entrants launch. Hiring slows. Funding dries up. A tool that gives you the same confident "yes, build it" answer in January and in November is not measuring anything — it is reasoning from a static model that hasn't moved since its training cutoff. Ask the same question twice, three months apart. If you get a freshly-dated answer with new evidence the second time, the tool is pulling live signals. If you get the same paragraph back, the tool is generating, not measuring. 3. The answer never says "I don't know" or "the signal is mixed." Real signals are messy. Real markets have ambiguity. A tool that always returns a confident verdict is optimizing for sounding useful, not for being correct. Look for tools that will tell you "the signal here is weak — we'd recommend more research" or "the data conflicts." A tool that is structurally incapable of saying "this is unclear" is a tool that will confidently send you in the wrong direction. 4. You cannot drill into the data. If the tool gives you a top-line verdict but no way to click through to the underlying searches, conversations, hires, or transactions — you are reading a generated paragraph dressed up as research. A measurement tool exposes its evidence. A hallucinating tool hides behind summary prose, because there is no evidence underneath. ## What real measurement actually requires Measuring a market is more expensive and slower than generating one. That cost is the reason most products take the shortcut. Real measurement reaches across four categories of signal, in parallel, in real time: Search & attention. What people are typing into search engines, how often, in what trend. Where the user is hunting. Conversation & pain. What people are complaining about, asking for help with, describing as broken, in unfiltered public conversations. Where the user is suffering. Adoption & spend. What people are signing up for, paying for, downloading, returning. Where the user is acting. Capital & hiring. Where money is moving, where companies are staffing up, where new entrants are launching. Where the market is responding. Each category requires real-time access to its underlying data sources. Each costs real money — API fees, data subscriptions, infrastructure to ingest and normalize the signals as they arrive. That cost is the actual price of real measurement, and it is the cost that a generated-paragraph product avoids by simply asking a language model to write something plausible instead. A tool that measures across all four of these is what actual validation looks like. A tool that talks about all four without ever showing you the underlying signal is hallucinating. ## The cost of acting on a hallucinated validation It's tempting to read the above and think: worst case, I waste a weekend. The cost is not a weekend. The time cost. Six to eighteen months of building the wrong thing. Six to eighteen months you could have spent on the idea that did have real demand. The capital cost. The savings you drained. The pre-seed you raised on the strength of a hallucinated TAM. The loan against the house. Hallucinated validation does not refund the runway it consumed. The opportunity cost. The other idea, the one you almost picked instead, that you'll never know would have worked. Founders only get a few real swings. A free validation tool that gives you a wrong answer is not free. It is the most expensive tool you will ever use. ## How to evaluate any validation tool in 60 seconds Take this with you. Ask any AI validation tool these three questions, in this order. 1. "Show me the source." Can the tool point you to specific real-world signals — by URL, by date, by source name — that support its verdict? If the tool says "trust me, the signal is strong" but cannot produce a single observable, it is hallucinating. 2. "What would change your verdict?" Can the tool tell you, specifically, what signal change would flip a Build to a Kill? Which search trend reversing? Which funding round drying up? Which complaint volume dropping? If the tool cannot name what it is tracking, it is not tracking anything. 3. "How recent is the data?" Can the tool tell you when its last signal pull was, per source? If every answer traces back to a training cutoff date, you are getting a snapshot of the past dressed up as the present. The world has moved on. Your tool hasn't. A tool that cannot answer all three is hallucinating. A tool that can is measuring. There is no third option. ## Build on real signal, or don't build The free Market Research brief is one click away. How is this different from market research? Market research tells you who's already in the space and how big it is — it's static. Demand Discovery tests live demand by contacting real prospects and measuring whether they actually engage. Market research is the foundation; demand discovery is the proof. How long does it take to get my report? Initial signal analysis is typically ready within a couple of days. The real-world outreach component runs over the following days as replies come in — and your Demand Score updates as new signals arrive. Do I have to send the outreach myself? Your call. We pre-write personalized emails for every prospect we identify. You can review and hit send yourself, or let the Agentic Launch agent send and follow up automatically. What if my idea fails the test? Then you just saved yourself 12 months and tens of thousands of dollars. The report tells you exactly which signals were weak and what to pivot toward — most founders find their best version of the idea this way. Is $49 really one-time? Yes. No subscription, no auto-renewal. You pay once, you get two ideas validated. If you want continuous outreach across more ideas, the Founder Pack ($149/mo) and Studio Pack ($499/mo) are available — but you never have to upgrade to see your Demand Discovery results. What sources do you actually pull signals from? Reddit, X (Twitter), Hacker News, Product Hunt, YouTube, GitHub, IndieHackers, Google Trends, and active hiring data. Plus the replies from the real prospects we contact for you — which is the only signal that comes from actual buying intent. ## Run Demand Discovery Get your Startup Idea Demand Score and find out if real demand exists.
